Tyler Hamilton blood test news!!!
OK, so we have talked about Tyler numerous times on this site. We support his charity by going to events, etc... And if you haven't read the news on all of the cycling news sites, keep reading....
The UCI has reported to Phonak that two of Tyler's recent blood tests have come back positive for mixed red blood cells, leading to speculation that Tyler might have had a blood transfusion. This is illegal. Athletes have been known to do this since the early eighties, including during the LA Olympics. The idea is to take out some blood some time before competition. Then right before competition, inject it back in and boost the number of oxygen carrying red blood cells in your body. This prevents the effects of lactic acid build up. Lactic acid is the "burn" you feel when your muscles get tired.
Tyler is defending his innocence and at this point, this site is giving him the benefit of the doubt. The new UCI test could simply be reporting inaccurate results, who knows. We think Tyler is an honest person. Team Phonak has called a press conference this evening, in which Tyler will be attending. Let's hope for some good news. This would be a shame, should Tyler be stripped of his Olympic gold and be banned from the sport. Good luck Tyler. We're hoping for the best.
